Hazards and Disasters:
Before and After Hurricane Ike

Hurricane Ike came ashore on Galveston Island, Texas on Saturday, September 13, 2008 as a Category 2 Hurricane. Ike was roughly 600 miles wide with sustained winds of 110 miles per hour.

As you zoom in to the shoreline, on the left you’ll see that the Flagship Hotel concrete pier, though damaged, did survive Hurricane Ike. But the next three wooden piers to the right were destroyed. Hooters restaurant is the first missing pier. The second, Murdoch’s Bathhouse, had been a favorite place for souvenirs since 1910. The third is the legendary Balinese Room Pier, extending 600 feet into the Gulf of Mexico. This famous 1940s and 50s nightclub welcomed such headliners as Frank Sinatra, Bob Hope, Duke Ellington, and Peggy Lee.
