Change Pair of Red River Flooding 2009
Hazards and Disasters:
Flooding in Fargo

In late March the Red River Basin of North Dakota and Minnesota experienced historic flooding. Landsat 5 satellite imagery, acquired on March 2 and April 3, processed and distributed by the U.S. Geological Survey, illustrate the rapid rise and extent of the flooding in the Fargo, North Dakota/Moorhead, Minnesota region.

The Red River flood stage in the Fargo area is 18 feet. On March 28 the river level was 40.82 feet. On April 3, the level had dropped to 36 feet, though the Landsat image acquired on that date shows increased spreading north of the city.

The Red River marks the boundary between North Dakota (Fargo, on the west side) and Minnesota (Moorhead, on the east side.)

City planners, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and other local, state, and Federal agencies will use the Landsat imagery to evaluate flood conditions and for planning future preventative measures.
